Stairlift Removal – What’s Involved And How Long Does It Take?
Stairlift removal is relatively quick and depending on the make and model, we can usually remove a stairlift within the hour. We will need to arrange a suitable time to collect your stairlift and we can pay you the same day via direct bank transfer. Depending on where you are in the country, and your availability and stairlift type, we can usually arrange a removal date within a few days.
We can’t re-use every make and model and prefer to stick to certain makes for our reconditioned stairlifts.
Here’s the process of stairlift removal for one of our latest. See the video at the end of this post for a full overview of the Stannah 260 stairlift removal.
Stairlift Removal – Process – Remove The Stairlift From The Rail
Before we can remove the rail, we need to take the stairlift off. This is done by driving the stairlift off the top of the rail. If your stairlift isn’t working, you’ll need to charge/replace the battery first, to allow it to move. Don’t worry as we can do this as part of our removal service. Before the stairlift will drive off the rail, you need to remove stoppers which prevent it from going past the rail end.
Stairlift Removal – Remove Connecting Pins
The next step in the stairlift removal process is to remove the connecting pins joining the rail together. This is slightly different for each stairlift make and model. In this example we are removing the Stannah 260 (curved stairlift). Pin removal for this stairlift rail type involves using a pin punch (5mm) and a hammer.
Stairlift Removal – Remove Draw Bolts
Next step is to remove the bolts at the back of the rail (draw bolts). These pull the rail together during assembly. This requires a 5mm Allen key – a ratchet is useful here as it can be a little tricky getting behind the rail. Once the pins and draw bolts are removed, the rail is still attached to the wooden stair treads. So this is the next thing to remove.
Stairlift Removal – Unscrew Rail Legs From Stairs
It’s a good idea to have a power screwdriver for this job. Also, an extension bar is useful to get into the awkward space behind the rail and reach the screws. In this example, there’s three screws per rail leg. Make sure you get every screw to safely remove the stairlift rail.
Once all the screws are out completely, the rail should be able to move. However, the rail sections sometimes are still tightly put together, so it requires a little force to separate the sections of the rail.
Separate The Rail Using A (Soft) Hammer
Ideally use a soft hammer to help you separate the rail sections. Here we use a normal hammer, but this can damage the rail sections if you are re-using them.
Remove Excess Wiring
Finally make sure to remove any excess wiring which connects the stairlift to the charger unit. Make sure you have unplugged the stairlift from the mains before you do this of course. With all this done, you can start removing the rail sections. Be careful with the stairlift unit as this can easily be damaged during transit. Particularly if it is to be re-used.
Recap – Step By Step
So here’s a quick recap and step by step stairlift removal guide for the model above (Stannah 260). Keep in mind that with other makes and models, removal can be more complex, particularly with more advanced models which require certain modes to be selected before the lift will drive off the rail.
- Turn off at the mains
- Remove stoppers at the top and drive stairlift off the top of the rail
- Take out pins connecting rail
- Remove draw bolts at the back
- Unscrew rail legs from the stairs
- Separate the sections of the rail
Here’s a video showing the basic steps for this particular model (Stannah 260 stairlift removal).
